Pliocene / Neogene
the raw material is contributed by Paolo Petracci
The Rio Merli section, about 30 m thick, is located in the Brisighella area (Ravenna, Emilia Romagna) and belongs to the Argille azzurre di Riolo Terme Fm. It consists of poorly stratified and homogeneous clays becoming well laminated at the top. According to biostratigraphical analysis on the foraminifera assemblages, the section is referable to the Middle Pliocene (Globorotalia bononiensis biozone). Excerpt from Girone, Angela 2007: Piacenzian otolith assemblages from northern Italy (Rio Merli section, Emilia Rom.)
